What cost per wear tells you
Cost per wear is the price of a watch divided by the number of times you have worn it. A watch that cost 2,000 and has been on your wrist for 400 days has cost 5 a wear. The figure falls every day you put it on, and a watch that stays in the drawer never brings its number down.
That is what it is good for. It argues for wearing what you already own rather than buying the next one, and it shows you which watches in a collection earn their place.
What it leaves out
- Resale value. Many watches can be sold for part of what they cost, some for more. The real cost of owning one is the price less what you get back.
- Service. A mechanical watch needs servicing every several years, and those bills belong in the total.
- The rest. Straps, insurance and repairs add up too.
Read it as a measure of how much you wear a watch, not as its full cost.

How do you work out cost per wear for a watch?
Divide what you paid by the number of days you have worn it. A watch bought for 3,000 and worn on 150 days has cost 20 a wear so far, and every further wear brings the figure down.
Is my watch worth what I paid?
Cost per wear cannot settle that alone, but it shows how much use you get for the money. Pick a figure per wear you are comfortable with and divide the price by it: that is how many wears it takes. A 3,000 watch gets under 10 a wear on its 301st wear.
What does cost per wear leave out?
